Settled Law

Settled Law Judge Kavanaugh said he believes Roe vs. Wade is settled law. We speak of a new house settling on its foundations, or Noah’s Ark settling on the peak of Mount Ararat as if that is the final word. It is not. We see political parties wrestle and struggle to gain the advantage thinking we can “settle this” in an election or in a voting booth. But no sooner is an issue settled with a ballot box than Politicians put on the boxing gloves, and there is another round. The fight is never over. It never ends, and it is never settled. The Treaty of Frankfort marked the end of the Franco-Prussian War after the humiliating defeat of Napoleon, and the uniting of the German States didn’t settle it either. It only allowed the political powers to plot and plan the next battle. Serbia stood in the way of a certain Oligarch’s ambitions to build a railroad from western Europe to Russia and somehow (it being in the way) led to the assassination of an Arch Duke in Sarajevo and WWI began. Then after 17 million people died, A Peace Treaty was signed at Versailles, but it settled nothing and led to WWII in which 80 million died. That led to the Korean War, which led to Vietnam, and so on and so on. Things are still unsettled. Until a sinner comes to the foot of the cross and surrenders, nothing is settled. We speak of “settling a debt” or of man’s law being settled law. Slavery used to be “settled law” according to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling (Dred Scott). So much for the Supreme Court. The Ten Commandments are in fact the only settled law and Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” The Scriptures cannot be broken. I broke God’s law. God had a case against me. Fifty years ago I turned my self in (my own conscience having testified against me), I chose to settle. Jesus Christ became my Savior, my Surety my Advocate. He died on the cross in my place and paid my sin debt in full, which he announced at Calvary. “Tetelestai.” That account (which I could not pay) is settled. That, my friend, is settled law. If you are accused of committing a crime which you did not commit, stand up and defend yourself like Judge Kavanaugh, or like Paul, appeal to Caesar, but when it comes to sin, which is a war against God, which you cannot win, don’t fight, settle. -id
