I Will Aim High "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, nor anything that is thy neighbor's" Ex. 20:17
Col. 3:2 Seek those things which are above. Abraham, Look up! (Gen.15)
The purpose of the commandments is not to convert as much as to convict. It is the school master, the mirror that brings us to Christ and shows us our need. The 10th Commandment convicted Paul and convinced him that it was impossible to be saved if it meant keeping the law.
Mk. 8:34-38 Life consists, not in the abundance of things (Lk. 12:15) Mt. 4:9 "All these things will I give you if you worship me." 1Jn. 2:15 "neither the things of the world." Heb. 11:26 reproach of Christ greater riches Gen. 15:5
Watch out for things. In Mt. 13:22 the Lord speaks about the "deceitfulness of riches." Paul warned Timothy about the "love of money" which is the root of all evil (1Tim. 4:6,10). Jesus began his ministry talking about things. He said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you (Mt. 6:33). He also said, "Your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things." Because we cannot live without things it is important that we learn how to live with them.
We must not live in order to get things. We must have a much higher aim and purpose. Love people and use things, never love things and use people. | |||
