The Fabric of our Lives

We have all seen the cotton commercials where cotton is called the fabric of our lives.

A fabric is a material of interwoven strands of fiber. They could be cotton, or flax, wool, or silk for example. Our lives are a combination of what are clearly choices and sometimes seem as chances that intertwine, engage, and cling to each other. You lost your mother when you were young, or you experienced a trauma, or a violent incident that seems to run through your life like a crimson strand or Rahab's scarlet cord. There was some opportunity you seized or allowed to slip from your fingers.

Life is like a fabric and we know we are not in full control of the loom. The shuttle of circumstances rushes by with an unpredictability carrying a colored thread that we know we have not chosen. Sickness, Divorce, loss of wealth, acts of war and what can only be called "acts of God." Strand after strand rushes by.

The fabric of our lives from this side of eternity is often like the underside of a tapestry. We can clearly see the threads, but they are twisted, knotted, and unintelligible to us. Things are not a neat, tidy and clear as we would like them. It all has to do with our perception and point of view. The Christian is ever aware that there is the higher view of life. From God's perspective, everything make sense. One day each believer will rise above the plain of this temporal world and see for the first time the right side of the tapestry. No more knots. No more loose ends, or dangling threads. No more confusion of colors, but all will be in its place. Then each will see what faith has believed all along. God knows what he is doing. "All things work together for good, to them that love God to those who are called according to his purpose."

Like Joseph's coat of many colors our lives are made up of a rainbow of hues, some bright and brilliant, some dull, others dark and dreary. And like Josheph's coat, our life's experience is one given us by a loving father. When at last we see the upper-side and say farewell to the under-side of this temporal life we shall be amazed at how God has woven the most difficult threads and the darkest colors into a harmonious blend of brilliance, wisdom and grace. And greatest of all, is the fact that because of Calvary's love sins will be no more and the saddest moments of confessed failure and sorrow shall have been changed. We shall again find that every word and promise of God is true. "Though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as snow."

Only faith in Christ, only trust in him and his sacrificial death on the cross for your sins will deliver you from the underside and lower life of unbelief. Only a sincere yielding of the loom to the kind and wise hand of omniscience will insure that every trial, tangle, and trouble shall by God's grace be transformed. Put your self in his hand today.
